Midweek Motivation: Finding A Solution To Transitioning Struggles

8.05.2015

It's been a hot, sticky humid Summer here in Kansas City and my hair hates it!

I had transitioned about 5 years ago breaking up with using relaxers on my hair. My transition the first time was easy breezy, now here I am again. This time long-term transitioning.
In the Spring of 2010, I decided to let my long, past-my-shoulders beautiful hair go. I cut it into a short tapered cut which was super convenient. A new thing for me since I had not cut my hair, other than trims of course, in 25 years.

However, after 3 months I soon discovered that short hair was even harder to take care of than long hair, for me at least. So I decided to just ditch the perms and let it grow back. It was cute and convenient, but I started missing my long hair!!!

When my natural did start growing out to a decent length, I ended up having to go to Texas for a funeral in mid-October 2012.

I pressed my hair out before leaving and thought of course I'll be fine. No flat iron needed, it should be cool. Wrong! I left Kansas City and it was cool 50 degrees, the Sunday we were supposed to leave Texas it got up to a scorching hot 80 degrees and poof went the hair again.

I decided I was done and went back to the "creamy crack" after 1 year and 4 months.
I had been struggling lately. No matter what I do it seems to just not want to lay down. I've tried Eco Styler Gel (olive oil), I've tried Soft & Beautiful Argon Oil Edge Control and tying my hair down all the way until I get to work but my edges only stay laid for a little while and then poof, they pop back.

This June after only transitioning for a mere 2 months, I looked at myself in the mirror and told my hair I had, had it. I was tired of rolling, twist-outing and bun-ing!
I needed something where I didn't have to do my hair every day! So I decided to try box braids for a while. I challenged myself to do them and after about 12 hours of braiding extensions into my hair, I was done.

I'm still hanging in there, rocking cornrows currently and loving them! Ladies, are you having trouble in this humidity like me? Stick it out, I promise it's going to be worth it!
